BARCODE HOUSE is a weekend house designed for a rural location where it is difficult to find skilled contractors. The client has very limited budget but requires a design with high levels of quality control. In order to obtain desired quality within a limited budget, the design maximizes the advantages of prefabrication modular house while cleverly gaining spacious spaces using small floor areas. The client also has a friend family visit the weekend house occasionally and requires the house to transform as a duplex.
QUALITY CONTROL through Prefabricated Modular House
Being located in a rural area far from the city, it is difficult to find skilled contractors to build on-site. The BARCODE HOUSE is designed using prefabricated modular system which most of the manufacturing occurs within a conditioned environment in a factory. This makes it possible to work with highly skilled contractors within a limited budget thus allowing high levels of quality control. The BARCODE HOUSE utilizes simple modular system yet at the same time results in a dynamic three dimensional space.
SPACIOUS SPACE through expansion of units
The budget is very limited resulting in a small floor area, but the site is big enough for the building to expand. Thus the design utilizes the size of a module system and expands the unit to gain spacious spaces. Using the same amount of floor area (67m2), the BARCODE HOUSE results in a much more spacious space which is visually equal to 110m2 of floor area.
SEMI-PRIVATE GARDEN in an empty plain
The separation and opening of the units result in a semi-private garden in between units. This is intentionally made not only to provide visual connections but to connect the semi-private garden and the public garden within the empty plain.
TRANSFORMATION TO A DUPLEX
Since the client has a friend family visit the weekend house occasionally and requires the house to be used like a duplex, Each ‘Bar’ of a BARCODE HOUSE can act as a separate house when necessary.
FUTURE APPLICATION
BARCODE HOUSE also shows possibility of utilizing this same idea to be used in many different locations.
